2. A brief Islamic and scientific analysis
I often talked about being mindful, but let's look into why there is an urgent need for that.
1. The mindless society
Mindlessness is described as performing actions automatically without awareness or thought, often leading to poor decision-making and reduced emotional engagement.
There are people around us, or should I say a majority of people around us, who are living in their own mindless state and aware of what's going on around them. But somehow through social media, they are aware about the other stuff in some other part of the world. To be one of them is not a big deal. But to create your own way by shattering through the existing corrupt methodology is what only a few can do.
One of the most significant reasons for this mindlessness is our gadgets and the mindless activities that we do on a daily basis. In order to leave those activities or to at least control them, we require something more than courage.
You might be thinking, "courage? Is it a war or what?" Well..my friend, it's something even tougher than that. These may look insignificantly easy to just put your phone down, go out and continue this routine, but you don't know that there are chains of habits, social/peer pressure, etc. around you that bounds you to it. Those chains seem too light until they become too heavy to be broken.
Revolting against the modern world to a certain degree, at least to safeguard yourself is really necessary. (Not because it's but modern but because it is evil.)
2. A brief Islamic and scientific analysis
Mindlessness basically shuts down our conscious mind, leading to the engagement of our subconscious mind to take decisions. This leads to improper decision-making and habits development, which may even lead to development of addictions in a majority of cases.
A study on workplace performance found that
"mindlessness can lower creativity, interpersonal skill, and efficiency."
Islamic perspective
In Islam, a similar concept of Ghafla can be found. Ghafla is defined as a mindless state where an individual forgets or ignores his Lord, which ultimately leads him to sin. As mentioned in the Quran,
"they have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, ears with which they do not hear. They are like livestock, rather they are more astray. It is they who are heedless."
Quran ,7"179
Being heedless is a consequence of being mindless about Allah. When a person loses Zikr of his Lord, such conditions are inevitable(although there might be other cases too, Allah knows best). And by Zikr I don't mean just Allahu Akbar, Subhanallah, etc. Though they are also a part of it, but the main Zikr is the remembrance through heart, such that it increases the love of Allah for the servant. He do what his Lord has commanded and abstain from what he prohibited. This type of Zikr is what we need. This is the type which will save us from Ghafla.
3. How to start the practice
- As I mentioned earlier, do Zikr, a lot of it.
Keep your lips moist from the remembrance of your Lord, with your heart actively engaged, such that whatever you do, you have a statement in your mind that Allah is watching me.
The more you practice, the better it gets.
- Go for a walk. Walk not just improves physical health, but immensely affects the mental state of individuals in a positive way.
- Stay away from toxicity. Toxic people affect your mind in a way that you can't even comprehend. Even if you don't follow them, their negative aura will suck away your energy.
- Reflect on the creation of Allah. Sit alone for a few minutes in an open space after Fajr or before Maghrib. Look at the sky, clouds, colors, and all the creation of Allah visible or sensible. And just focus on the beauty of creation. Your focus should be such that whenever a thought other than this comes to your mind, then you are able to turn it turn it away
4. Conclusion
Mindlessness pulls us away from the remembrance of Allah and the purpose of life. Practicing mindfulness through constant Zikr, reflecting on Allah's creation, and avoiding toxic influences not only restores our spiritual connection but also enhances our mental clarity and decision-making. True mindfulness lies in remembering Allah with a heart full of love and submission, guiding us to live a purposeful and fulfilling life.
اللهم مُصَرِّفَ الْقُلُوْبِ صَرِّفْ قُلُوْبَنَا عَلَى طَاعتِكَ
O Allah! Controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience
Ameen.
