In the Quran, Allah Almighty says,

“And fitnah is worse than killing”

(Al-Baqarah 2:191).

Fitnah is a trial that tests a person’s faith and can lead them towards misguidance. Fitnah is not only something outwardly visible but exists within a person’s heart and mind, distancing them from the path of Allah.

So, let us understand, in the light of the Quran and authentic hadith, how we can protect ourselves from fitnah in the present times. The first point for protecting ourselves from fitnah today is...

1. Holding firmly to Quran and Ahadees

Prophet ﷺ said:

"I am leaving behind two things among you. As long as you hold firmly to them, you will never go astray. And those two things are the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the beloved Prophet ﷺ."

Refrence: Muwatta Malik, Hadith 1628, Book 46, Hadith 3

2.Detachment from the world and concern for the Hereafter

Often fitnah arise because of the love for this world and its temptations. We should cultivate more concern for the Hereafter in our hearts than for this world, As

The Prophet ﷺ said:.

""The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the unbeliever."

Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2956, Book 55, Hadith 1

3.  Being God conscious

In the Quran Allah says:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِۦ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

O you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

Aal-e-Imran 3:102

When a person has taqwa (God-consciousness) in their heart, they stay away from all forms of fitnah, as they constantly remember that their Lord is watching them.

4. Supplications & Certainty in Allah

One way to avoid fitnah is to have trust in Allah and rely on supplications (dua), as the beloved Prophet ﷺ always sought refuge from fitnah. We should also seek Allah’s help through supplication and patience, as supplication is the weapon of a believer.

There is a hadeeth regarding this as:

Prophet ﷺ said :

"A time will come to the people when the fitnah (trial, tribulation) will be like a part of the darkness of the night. A person will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by the evening, or will be a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by the morning. Some people will sell their religion for a small price."

Sahih Muslim, Hadith 118, Book 1, Hadith 351

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2269, Book 46, Hadith 18

From all these hadiths, we learn how severe fitnah can be. It puts a person's faith in great danger.

This is the era of fitnah, beware, O people,

Save yourselves, teach your children with care,

Not just knowledge of the world, but the Quran too,

Keep them close to Allah, in everything they do.

For education can be a fitnah(if it takes you away from Allah ), wealth a test,

Even children and inheritance, can cause unrest.

Conclusion

In the end, we should remember that this world is a test, and fitnah is a part of that test. We must strengthen our deeds and always place our trust in Allah سبحانه وتعالى. With these few words, I will conclude, and I hope you will read and act upon these reminders with care.

 اللهم مُصَرِّفَ الْقُلُوْبِ صَرِّفْ قُلُوْبَنَا عَلَى طَاعتِكَ

O Allah! Controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience

Ameen.
